The cabin space also holds up to Honda’s gold standard. Not only do you have ample headroom but legroom measuring 41.0 in. (front row), 40.8 in. (second row), and 32.5 in. (third row). The cargo space also impresses with a max of 87.0 cubic feet to haul life’s challenges.
Honda Pilot Vs. Others
Competition is fierce in the three-row midsize SUV class, with the Kia Telluride leading the pack since 2020. The 2022 Telluride received a styling update inside and out, new driver-assist features, and an off-road model that has kept it at or near the top of the segment.
The related Hyundai Palisade is very similar but has a different style and attitude. The Volkswagen Atlas is also worth checking out for its large cargo hold, which approaches the Honda Pilot’s exceptional capacity. But the VW comes up short in power and fuel economy.
Our Point of View
The Honda Pilot is the brand’s largest SUV and one of the most popular in the three-row midsize class. Completely redesigned last year, the Pilot is now the largest and most powerful SUV Honda has ever made.
It looks more rugged than before, but still delivers the smooth and responsive car-like ride and handling that has made it a favorite of so many families. Powering the Pilot is one of the largest engines in this class, a refined V6 with 285 horsepower.
That’s a bit less than you get from the popular Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade, but more than the Volkswagen Atlas offers. Despite its size, the Pilot is lively on the road. It’s quick off the line and has plenty of passing power on the highway, even when loaded with people and cargo. The cabin is modern and attractive without being needlessly complex.
The design isn’t quite as fancy as some others in this class, but it’s spacious and boasts class-leading storage, very comfortable seating, and easy-to-use controls. Pilot’s innovative second-row center seat is a clever feature families will appreciate.
It gives the SUV flexible seating capacity for up to eight, for those unforeseen carpool moments. In the age of massive touchscreens, we were surprised to find the Pilot’s available 9-inch screen to be just large enough. It lacks the wow factor of a larger screen, but it’s well placed and the Pilot’s infotainment system is intuitive.
And unlike most rivals, the Pilot offers legitimate off-road capabilities with the TrailSport model, which gets special suspension, all-terrain tires, and other trail-ready features.
