This sensor determines transmission speed based on the transmission range. For example, based on this information, the transmission control system calculates which gear is required and how long the shift should take.
In the transmission range control system, error code P1706 represents an open circuit in the switch. It’s a generic trouble code that applies to all OBD-II-equipped vehicles.
The transmission range switch is coded with that number. There may be a problem with the switch, or the adjustment may be out of whack. Different models and makes have different specifications for defining, troubleshooting, and repairing them.
P1706 Honda Code Definition: Open in Transmission Range Switch Circuit
The Transmission Range Switch, located on the side of the transaxle, transmits the gearshift lever position signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
The PCM performs monitoring of the Transmission Range Switch. Transmission Range Switches that do not meet factory specifications will generate Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
Possible Causes Of The Code P1706 Honda
This error code is often caused by an open signal line or a malfunctioning switch. However, there are also other possibilities:
- The circuit for Transmission Range Switch has poor electrical connections
- There is a short or open in the transmission range switch harness
- The gear position switch (transmission range switch) is faulty
- Harnesses for the Park/Neutral switches are open or shorted
- In the circuit of the park/neutral switch, there is a poor electrical connection
- The switch for Park/Neutral is faulty
- An incorrectly adjusted park/neutral switch
Common Symptoms Of The Code P1706 Honda
A Check Engine light will illuminate, and the code will be registered to the vehicle’s computer, just like other error codes.
Diagnosis Of The Code P1706
As with many others, Autodesk II scan tools are the best way to diagnose this error code.
To detect the malfunction, the voltage from IG1 must be more than 10.5V, and the input voltage from VBU to TCM must be less than 6V for at least two seconds after it is initiated.
How to Fix The P1706 Honda Code?
There are several common repairs for this code, including:
- A bad electrical connection in the park/neutral switch harness circuit needs to be repaired or replaced
- Replacement or repair of the park/neutral switch harness
- An updated Park/Neutral switch was installed
There is no need to worry about this error code since it can be fixed relatively easily. A simple axle stand can be used to secure your vehicle when you jack it up. You will also need to replace the sensor as well, as well as the wiring plug.
Keep the oil in the hole by putting your thumb over the top of the hole when you remove the sensor. Check the plug and wiring for corrosion or water damage as well.
Notes
Ensure that the position switch fits tightly on the shaft, then look for a poor connection at the shift position switch. Shift the transmission through the gears a few times to see if the code returns.
A code will be set if the Engine Control Module (ECM) does not see any gear selection and the vehicle moves faster than 30 miles per hour. Check the wire harness and the shift position switch on the side of the transmission.
Final Words
If you get a sensor error code, the problem could be the sensor, the wiring, or the computer. For example, if the wiring on the sensor connector has been damaged, you may want to check those pins for corrosion and inspect the connector to see if any damage has been done.
There is a possibility that the transmission range switch needs to be replaced. The wiring might be shorted. Alternatively, it could just be a goof, and nothing will be permanently damaged.
