The Honda Odyssey is a popular and versatile minivan that has been a favorite among families for many years. One unique feature that sets it apart from other minivans on the market is its built-in vacuum cleaner.
A vacuum is a convenient tool that helps keep the vehicle’s interior clean and tidy. However, not all Honda Odyssey models come equipped with this feature.
During the early twentieth century, an internal combustion engine was used to power one of the first vacuum cleaners.
Without a doubt, the internal combustion engine has proven most successful when used in motor vehicles.
Considering that we have had to wait nearly a century for these technologies to converge, it’s impressive that we have been able to do so.
You can clean your new Honda Odyssey with the vacuum cleaner! The following tips will show you where to find and how to use the Honda Odyssey vacuum.
Which Honda Odyssey Has A Built In Vacuum?
There are two HondaVAC® vacuums that come standard on the following model years and trim levels:
- 2014-2015 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite
- 2016-2017 Honda Odyssey SE & Touring Elite
- 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey Touring & Elite
- 2021 Honda Odyssey Elite

Take a look at this scenario. There’s a long journey ahead of you to visit family. The kids have been enjoying the ride in your new Honda Odyssey, but you know their patience is wearing thin.
As a reward for their excellent behavior and to avoid any breakdown of peaceful relations, you decide to provide them with some delicious cookies.
You find a cookie-crumb disaster area in the back of the car before you remember how messy your kids can be.
Upon your arrival, thoughts of showing off your bright new Odyssey begin to fade. It wasn’t until then that you remembered that Honda Odyssey had a unique feature tucked away in the back. It is time for the vacuum cleaner to go. After a quick clean-up, disaster was avoided.
Your family is happy, you are riding in a brand-new Honda Odyssey, and you are beaming with pride as you arrive at your destination. Hey, come check out my new car.”
It’s obvious that they’re impressed with how clean and neat the kids kept the back seat during the long trip.
How Does It Work?
Putting the car in accessory mode or running the engine is required for the vacuum to work. When you need to vacuum, you don’t want the engine running always. This makes accessory mode an important feature.
A vehicle in accessory mode is set by pressing the start/stop button without applying the brake. When doing this, you must have your remote fob with you so you can press the start/stop button.
I would be annoyed if I accidentally ran down the battery and left the vacuum on. The Honda engineers have also considered that.
During the first eight minutes of operation, the vacuum runs without consuming any power, which saves the battery. You can vacuum indefinitely as long as you run the engine.
Using The Vacuum
Vacuum power buttons can be found in the compartment underneath the vacuum. Remove the hose and attach one of the two attachments.
A gulper and crevice tool can be conveniently found in the vacuum compartment. These tools should make it impossible to miss any part of the vehicle while cleaning it.
Using the power button, turn the machine on and begin cleaning. There are 8 feet of usable length on the hose. It is thus possible to clean right up to the front of the vehicle by reaching through the passenger compartment.
You don’t have to use the bag that comes with the vacuum when you replace the filter. Just use the waste canister if that’s what you prefer. An individual compartment is located underneath the hose and attachments.
You can remove the waste canister by lowering the compartment door and pressing a button. It is recommended that the canister be gently withdrawn, and its contents be disposed of.
By sliding the waste canister back into place and closing the door, you can replace it. Replaceable filters and bags can be obtained from your Honda dealer.
Always Have a Clean Interior with the HondaVac® System
HondaVac® makes maintenance easy and cost-effective for Odyssey models fitted with the HondaVac®.
Using HondaVac’s 8-foot vacuum hose with crevice and gulper attachments, drivers can reach up to the front passenger area and clean the entire Odyssey interior without detours to the car wash.
There is a compact cargo side panel where you can store the vacuum hose and accessories.
The HondaVac® is Energy Efficient and Easy to Use
Using HondaVac®, you can conserve fuel, money, and time at the pump by running without running the engine. Your Odyssey’s battery will remain charged for an extended period of time when the HondaVac® is running.
Utilize Honda’s push-to-start system to conveniently activate the integrated vacuum by putting the Odyssey in Accessory Mode.
Although HondaVac® comes with a retractable filter and bag, it works just as well without them, making maintenance as easy as cleaning.
How Does It Compare with Other Vacuum Cleaners?
A vacuum cleaner from Honda should be of the same high quality as the Honda brand’s build quality. Comparing it with a hand vacuum cleaner, how does it fare?
With Honda’s in-car vacuum cleaner, cereal, pet hair, sand, and uncooked rice are all handled as easily as with expert hand vacuum cleaners.
Compared to other software packages, it is fast, has a large storage capacity, and is thorough. Because there is a tool built into it, it wins every time.
Where Is The Vacuum Cleaner In The Honda Odyssey?
I think it’s a great piece of equipment. The system works well and is extremely useful. However, where has it been hidden? Perhaps you can forgive yourself for not being able to locate the vacuum cleaner.
Compartment covers maintain a neat and tidy appearance while concealing the vacuum cleaner and waste canister. If you discover it, you’ll use it infrequently to keep the interior neat and tidy.
Behind a drop-down door panel is a compartment for the vacuum cleaner on the left side of the cargo area.
You can access the hose and attachments by lifting and lowering the door handle. The power button is in the door compartment to the right of the power button.
The vacuum cleaner’s waste canister is located below its compartment. There is a door behind which it lies.
In addition to the Honda Odyssey’s built-in vacuum cleaner, several other things make the vehicle appealing. This is a great choice if you have a family, like the outdoors, like to play sports, or transport pets.
There’s something to be said about this feature. Unfortunately, the 2022 Honda Odyssey will not have these features. It’s for the following reasons.
Honda Odyssey’s HondaVac Built-In Vacuum Option Jammed for Foreseeable Future
We at Honda are proud to have a long and proud tradition of thoughtful and whimsical touches. Do you remember how the cargo floor of the first-generation CR-V converted into a picnic table?
It was one of those features, a long-time staple on the Odyssey minivan, which drank up spilled Cheerios and tracked in the dirt during the kid-schlepping process. But the HondaVac has now been discontinued.
As The Drive first noticed, HondaVac’s supplier, Shop-Vac Corporation, could be responsible for the problem.
When asked about the reason for the discontinuation, Honda confirmed that it was due to a supplier issue. Among the things a representative told them were:
There are a number of reasons why the timing of model year introductions varies from model to model, some of which are beyond our control.
A HondaVac feature was discontinued in the Odyssey Elite at the end of the 2021 model year due to a supplier issue, which forced us to advance the introduction of the model year 2022 Odyssey.
Also, Honda has not yet decided on a new supplier for its HondaVac project, though it is not giving up on it completely. Earlier this year, the supplier behind the HondaVac went out of business.
Final Words
Still, there is some hope left. Its new owners, GreatStar Tools USA, plan to reopen Shop-Vac’s plant and expand its business after purchasing it at the end of 2020.
A Honda spokesperson confirmed that the company is looking into the possibility of bringing back the HondaVac to the Odyssey, but no alternative supplier has yet been identified.
