Civic is one of the most popular Honda. Good value, higher efficiency, and ample interior make the Civic the finest choice. Things are soon to lift with the new Honda Civic hybrid.
As exciting as it may sound, the Civic hybrid is to enter production in 2024. Honda has high expectations with this Civic hybrid, as the earlier hybrid of the Civic fell out of the market during its 9th generation and was replaced by the Insight Hybrid.
The spark was only for some time but it was real! Honda discontinued the gasoline + electric motor-based Civic due to their shift in new technologies and models, in response to dominating market demands and regulations.
However, the year 2025 is going to be a comeback for the hybrid Civic. Honda expects that the Civic hybrid will cover 40% of Civic sales. That we are yet to find out in our article today. Let’s discuss the promises and potential the upcoming Honda Civic hybrid holds for its fans.
Honda Civic Hybrid 2025: Work in Progress
The Honda Civic Hybrid is to return in the 2025 model year. It’s going to be the 10th generation of Honda Civic. Production to start in Canada, from 2024. Following this, Honda’s Indiana factory will work on the Civic hybrid hatchback to complete the lineup.
However, components of the powertrain are to be manufactured in Ohio. After that, the elements would be sent to the destination – the final assembly points.
Not many details have been revealed on this new hybrid, here’s what we know. The new Civic hybrid will receive the 2.0L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine and a two-motor hybrid system. The good news is that the hybrid will be available both as a Sedan and a Hatchback.
After all, that’s what has always been expected of the Civic. It comes both in a Sedan and a Hatchback. Honda has been pushing forward its plan to sell solely zero-emissions vehicles by 2040. The timing couldn’t be more perfect with the Insight Hybrid now being replaced.
We believe the new Civic hybrid will be more fuel efficient with less emissions. A lot of new features including the integration of the latest technology, modern design, and open spacious interior are on the queue with this new Civic hybrid.
Let’s not forget Honda Sensing 360 safety features would also be an integral part of the 2025 Civic Hybrid.
The Announcement Came in Late October 2023
In October 2023, Honda announced that a new Civic Hybrid is scheduled for the United States and Canada in 2024. This new Honda Civic Hybrid will be available both in Sedan and Hatchback variants.
“Production of the new Civic hybrid sedan will begin in spring 2024 at Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM) in Alliston, Ontario, followed by the hatchback, which will be manufactured at the Indiana Auto Plant (IAP) in Greensburg, Indiana.”
Initially, the Civic Hybrids will be released in North America. North American suppliers of Honda will deliver the hybrid parts for the new 2025 Civic. Let us remind you, that it’s all part of Honda’s 2040 electrification strategy.
The Timing Couldn’t Be More Perfect
The Insight Hybrid was discontinued in 2022. Poor fuel economy – additional oil consumption and engine failure were two of the primary reasons for Insight to fail the market value.
With the 3rd generation Insight being on sale last year, in April 2022, Honda confirmed that the Insight won’t continue and its production will come to an end in June 2022. The core Honda models would remain the primary concern of the company. That’s why progress was biased on Honda’s new and comparatively more efficient hybrid technology.
Now that, the Insight Hybrid is no more to compete, it’s the perfect time for the Civic Hybrid to have a royal comeback. It is about to be stronger and more performance-oriented. That’s what we believe.
Honda has already placed this hybrid on top of the Accord lineup and it bears Honda’s one of largest nameplates.
This new Civic Hybrid will directly compete with Toyota’s top-selling Prius. It’s good because Honda is ultimately targeting the young buyers of this Civic Hybrid. To engage the consumers further, pre-orders are open for the all-electric Honda Prologue SUV. It’s all part of Honda’s broad electrification plan, and it has started!
As the production gets closer, we will have more details with time to come. Following the few details we have, below are the tentative specs of the Honda Civic Hybrid.
Our Expectations with the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid
It’s a tough comeback. Based on what data we have, the new hybrid follows the same system as the Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid. It starts with the 2.0-liter Atkinson inline-four and the two-motor engine.
**Note: Atkinson engines are known for higher efficiency. They offer longer expansion strokes than the compression stroke. This helps your Honda to gain better thermal efficiency than any conventional piston engine.
However, things would lift if the Civic Hybrid delivers a slightly different tone than the Accord and CRV. It’s expected for the Civic lovers.
But that’s still too soon to determine. To beat the domestic competition, this hybrid must be available at 181 HP and 232 lb-ft of torque or more. The numbers are standard values for the Honda CRV and should be ideal for the Civic Hybrid too.
The 2023 model-year Honda Civic delivers 30 MPG for the city, 37 MPG for the highway, and 33 MPG combined. That goes for the Civic Sport trim. Meanwhile, the EX has the better fuel economy with 33 MPG for the city, 42 MPG for the highway, and 36 MPG combined. Numbers are based on 2023 EPA mileage ratings.
If the new Honda Civic Hybrid is to compete with its rival Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Toyota Prius, it has to be more than that. The fuel economy for combined city/highway driving must be around 50 MPG.
Only then Civic Hybrid can sequentially compete with its rivals including the boss premium Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.
Although Honda made some mistakes following the price plan for the Honda e EV. The upcoming Honda EVs are sure to revise it and come up with better solutions. The 2025 Honda Civic should range between $26,000 and $44,000 at an MSRP range. Thus, you have what it takes for the Civic value.
We also expect the battery life to have a better lifespan. The new Civic hybrid should have at least 6 to 10 years or up to 100,000 mile coverage.
In short, a lot of interesting and modern features define the 2025 Civic Hybrid. This is what happens when Honda goes the extra mile to give the classic Civic a new look with better power. Orders for the Civic Hybrid will be open from 2025.
Is Honda Being Biased?
With the end of 2023, consumers are more interested in value-oriented pickup trucks and SUVs.
However, Honda still believes there is a lot to do with the Sedans and Hatchbacks, and it’s all part of the business plan.
Mamadou Diallo, vice president of automobile sales for American Honda, said,
“The market has shifted away from passenger cars, but cars still matter to Honda, the cars bring in younger, more multicultural buyers to the brand.”
Honda is hopeful that the Sedans and Hatchbacks will bring young minds to the platform. Over the past decades, Honda has offered thousands of hybrid models. Every time, the company has made the best technology available for its popular lineups.
We believe the Civic Hybrid will also be no exception to this. What Honda expects of its new model lineup would remain real and the Hybrids will pull almost half, 40% of Civic sales.
Another reason to justify this margin value is that consumers know about Civic. The Civic is not entirely a new vehicle. Honda has sold the Civics all around the world. Over 30 million units have been sold worldwide, and the number is still counting.
It’s one of the most attractive choices for modern buyers. The Civic is, undeniably, one of the most incredible compact cars worldwide. It’s appealing and useful. We believe the new hybrid powertrain would serve as a handsome choice for Honda lovers around the world.
The demand and desire are clear for people who have been looking for an electrified compact car, but not an SUV. Some people are still not ready to go completely electric or shift to an SUV, so the Civic hybrid delivers an ideal pick for them.
In 2024, what do you expect of Honda? Let us know in the comments.
We are hopeful of the new editions Honda is about to offer – the CRV Honda Sport-L trim, Honda Prologue, Honda HRV, Afeela, and ultimately Honda FCEV and EV plan for 2040.
Also, this year has been quite eventful for Honda too. This is the year, Honda recalls 30,000 HRV and Accords due to seatbelt failure. As 2024 starts, we believe it will bring some amazing news for us too!
