Our world is entering a new era of AI, electric vehicles, VR, and AR technology. It is really surprising how car manufacturers have been putting all the latest tech on board to deliver the best.
Honda came up with the immersive VR tech, used to build its future vehicles including the 2024 Honda Prologue and the 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport (all electric).
So, how useful is Honda Immersive VR Tech? And how did it contribute to users’ driving experience? We will figure it out today!
Our article today is all about What is Honda Immersive VR Tech and how it adds some of the best value to the user experience. Let’s start.
What Is Honda Immersive VR Tech?
If you are thinking, Honda integrated some damn VR tech with your car, here’s a correction for you.
The immersive VR tech was introduced as a post-COVID-19 solution for global engineering and design teams. We all know that the upcoming EV Honda Prologue is coming for a global debut.
The design team met requirements during the post-Covid era, where specific guidelines for communication were mandatory.
Hence, the LA-based Honda design team for the prologue increased the use of VA tech for proper collaboration with global engineering and design teams.
So, what exactly is Honda immersive VR tech?
The immersive VR technology offered a complete virtual environment. Designers used this environment to virtually collaborate and refine EV’s clay models, color, interiors, materials, and finish.
The team used,
VR Headsets
The foundation of every Honda Immersive VR Tech starts with the VR headset. Honda immersive VR tech includes some state-of-the-art headsets, stuffed with motion-tracking sensors and high-end lenses.
The headsets offered designers a fully immersive visual experience with high-resolution 3D graphics and a wide field of view to explore the interior of the Prologue.
Motion Track System
The functionalities of the VR headset are not limited to creating a virtual space only. Engineers were also associated with high-end motion-tracking systems within the virtual environment. They had infrared cameras or accelerometers.
For example, the VR tech simulated passengers sitting inside the electric vehicle, and this tech can track the movement of the person’s head and convert it to readings.
It helped designers improve the ergonomics of the vehicle and explore the limits and barriers of the seats and comfort.
VR Tech with GPUs
A powerful graphics processing unit (GPU) lies at the core of any immersive VR tech, not just Honda. All the detailed realistic 3D environments, designers utilize for the best are possible due to the highly efficient GPU.
Honda has always been careful about quality. The powerful GPU simulated a realistic and detailed Prologue environment and highly interactive elements at high frame rates.
Driving Experience Is Real
Honda, as always, wanted to deliver a convincing and safe driving experience for its users. To ensure, it goes accordingly with the Prologue, a physics engine is employed.
The engine stimulated the behavior of the vehicle. Designers had a full experience of suspension, engine dynamics, and handling properties. Honda engineers and designers had a real-time driving experience with the prologue.
This also determined the maximum mile coverage and faced the limitations of the first electric SUV beforehand.
Lots of Tools and Feedback
Additionally, Honda Immersive VR Tech offers lots of customization tools for engineers. They can use them for a wide variety of ranges to modify the virtual Prologue.
For example, users can change car colors, trims, and accessories, and that’s also in real-time visualization.
Things got a lot better for the designers to have an overview of instant changes, which they don’t have with the traditional design process.
Furthermore, we believe the VR system was also featured with haptic feedback systems.
The system used vibrations and force feedback to simulate the sensation of touching and interacting with objects. You just get a better sense of immersion.
It has been 6 years since the Honda design team has been exploring, testing, and validating VR technology.
The Prologue 2024 is believed to be the hotcake of 2024 because no other electric SUV has seen the light of the day with this magnitude of production. And all these will be possible due to the availability of Honda’s immersive VR tech.
Honda immersive VR tech is powerful, the team used the perfect visualization of 3D models to bring out maximum efficiency from the upcoming prologue series.
It’s important to note that, the traditional design process was still in place. Honda’s immersive VR tech (and AR too) was used to execute the interior of the upcoming Honda models and offer better collaboration with instant feedback.
Mathieu Geslin, VR technology leader, at Honda Design Studio, said,
“Incorporating virtual and augmented reality in the design process allowed our Honda engineers and designers to merge digital content and physical assets in a cohesive way to interact with what they’re experiencing and touching in an immersive environment,”
He also added,
“Honda Prologue was key to fully using VR in a data-led design process, with clay modeling as the verification tool, something we will carry forward into the development of other Honda products.“
