Measure five inches from the corner of the heat shield and mark it forward, then drill a hole in the mark. Ensure the hole lines up with the frame where the hitch will be installed.

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 on the passenger’s side.

Step 4: Lining the Holes

Use a U-haul hitch jack to line up the two forward holes of the hitch with the drilled holes.

Step 5: Drill Holes in the Frame

Then, mark the two rear holes on the hitch to align it with the frame later. Remove the hitch right after. After marking, proceed and drill holes in the frame.

Repeat this step on the passenger’s side again.

Step 6: Placing in Bolts

Use two longer and shorter carriage bolts to insert in the holes of the heat shield on the driver’s side. A reverse fishwire technique is needed to install the bolts. 

Make sure you enlarge the holes accordingly before putting the bolts in.

Repeat on the passenger’s side.

Step 7: Installing the Hitch

Bring back the hitch and line it up with the holes on the heat shield and the fish wires.

Step 8: Installing Flange Nuts

Finally, remove fish wires and install flange nuts instead. Tighten the bolts according to the hitch manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. Use an 18mm socket to do so. Otherwise, it may make a rattling noise.

Repeat again on the passenger side.

Step 9: Wrap-Up

Finally, put the muffler back and get the car back to its normal condition.
